In last year’s race, Scott Dixon had the pole but was quickly overtaken by Palou, who led 47 laps but was undone by a yellow flag coming out just after he had entered pit road. After Jimmie Johnson crashed on lap 194 causing a red flag, Ericsson outlasted Pato O’Ward as another yellow flag ended the race making Ericsson the second Swedish champion of the Indy 500.
Rookies Benjamin Pederson, Agustin Canapino, R.C. Emerson and Sting Ray Robb will make their Indianapolis 500 debuts today with Pederson starting in the middle of row four.
It has been six years since an American-born driver has won this event, dating back to Alexander Rossi’s historic win as a rookie in 2016. Rossi starts today’s race on the inside of row three alongside two-time winner Takuma Sato and 2013 champion Tony Kanaan.
